Racing -TTPYC conducts an active sailboat race program and members participate in all major areas races. The Club is a member of the United States Sailing Association, the U.S. National Sailing Authority and PHRF-NW, the local performance handicapping association. There is plenty of racing opportunity at all levels of experience, for both skipper and crew, on local races and in larger area racing on the Puget Sound and British Columbia. The major local race is the Duwamish Head Race, part of a four race series conducted by Southern Sound Yacht Clubs. There is also a three-race Windjammer Series. Single-handed and couples races, five "around the can" series from early Spring to late Fall are available to participate in. The Spring Regatta, is an April event. The Mid-Sound Summer Social is sponsored by Three Tree Point Yacht Club and the Des Moines Marina.

Entry at any level of experience is invited, and friendly competition is fostered to encourage all to participate, from novice to "Old Salt"!

AWK! Summer is almost over. Here it is September already. I hope you had a great summer on and off the water. I know a number of you were able to take extended cruises to explore and enjoy our beautiful water ways. I wasn’t lucky enough to take an extended cruise but I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time on the water sailing. I got to sail every Wednesday evening in Tacoma with the CYCT Windseekers, our Mid-Sound Summer Social on Thursday evenings (isn’t that a great event) and I got to finish it off by sailing one week with the kids in the new Des Moines Youth Sailing Program. What a blast! I certainly don’t want to forget that in the midst of all this we had a fun Double Handed Race in the middle of July.

There was a lot going on this summer but September seems to be the beginning of the second half of the racing season and the schedule can become full in a hurry. I’d like to take a look at what is coming up.

The Fall Series starts Thursday September 9th and then moves to the weekends of September 11th and 25th. Be sure to signup, the sooner the better. That way your score keeper can set the class breaks before the first race. You will find the registration here.

There is something new this year that actually started in June. It is The Commencement Bay Challenge Series. This is an attempt by our local area yacht clubs to get us competing with each other in our local area races. We have chosen the Commodore’s Trophy Race to be our sponsored race. The next race in the series is the Point Beals race sponsored by CYCT. We were only able to have one representative from our club in the first race and that was Bob and Laura Crews with their Catalina 30, Silver Breeze. They represented our club well with a first place in the no flying sail cruising class. I really would like to see this thing take off. See if you can fit it into your plans and let me know.

The intent of this series is to bolster racing at each of the noted yacht clubs by actively soliciting their racing boats to travel to the other clubs and participate in racing here in the Commencement Bay area.  We have chosen events that include buoy, short and middle distance races to give every competitor a feel for each of these types of races.  In addition, the series will not cost an individual yacht any more than the entry fee for the individual race.  It should be noted that this is the program for the Commencement Bay Challenge Cup for the year 2010

The last event that I want to mention is our annual Commodore’s Trophy Race and Clambake. This year it will be held on Saturday, October 2nd. As you can see from above, this race has taken on even more importance by being the third stop in the Commencement Bay Challenge. We will also present trophies for both the Fall Series and the Commodore’s Trophy Race at the party after racing. You can obtain the registration form here.

There’s lots of racing coming up. I hope to see you out there.

Tom's Race Reports
July 18 2010- 2010 Double Handed Race
Pat Water’s Liberte’ with crew Cliff Marble were the winners of the No Flying Sails division and Greg and Vanessa Zaputil with their boat ZZZAP were winners of the Flying Sail Division of the Three Tree Point YC Double Handed Race held Saturday, July 17th.

The race was held in medium to light air but everyone finished before 2:00. There was a party and trophy presentation after the race. It almost lasted as long as the race. Fun time!

Thanks to our Race Committee, Shelley Conti and Phil and B J Chin for a good call on the course and a fun race.

Commencement Bay Challenge
I received a flyer in the mail last week about the Commencement Bay Challenge Series. This is pretty short notice but it was something that was proposed last March by Eric Nelson from Corinthian Yacht Club Tacoma. When he contacted me I thought it was a good idea so I tossed our hat into the ring. They were looking for a race in the early fall so I proposed our Commodore's Trophy Race.

Here is the schedule:
Summer Vashon - June 19th - TYC
Point Beals - September 18th - CYCT
Commodore's Trophy - October 2nd - TTPYC
Point Defiance - October 30th - CYCT
Lemans - November 13th - GHYC

I realize we are out on the edge geographically but I feel this gives us a good chance to get into the area (our closest area) mix and to get some folks up our direction to see what we do. Please take a look at the attachment and let me know.
