COMMODORE'S CORNER
Hi fellow members,

Our youth sailing committee, in cooperation with the City of Des Moines and the Poverty Bay Sail and Power Squadron was a great success this summer!   There were three weeks of instruction and around 15 kids went through the program.  I helped teach the last week along with our famous Davy Jones and had a ton of fun!  We are already talking about plans for next year.  Shelley Conti and her committee have done an awesome job in putting this all together!

The MidSound Summer Social started Thursday, July 8th and ran six Thursday evenings in a row.  This is another great fun raiser for Hospitality House as well as collecting food for the food bank.  David Garman and his team put together a successful, fun series this summer.  I am not sure of the final numbers, but I do know we collected a lot of dollars for Hospitality House and a lot of food for the local food bank.  It was more than enough funds to support two women in the Hospitality House program. Thanks to all of you that participated!

George and Daphne Thompson organized a cruise to Desolation Sound this year. I believe five or six boats participated.  It looked like a fun trip.  Sue and I could not join them this year as we went to Alaska instead (not in Liberté).  However, we hope to join in next year.  Barkley Sound anyone? Read more about the cruise on page-

We have another new member in the club, thanks to vigorous recruiting by Don and Kristie Brame! She is Joan Marie and sails a Ranger 23 called “Wild Goose”.  Joan was raised on a boat and has been deeply involved with boating all of her life.  Please welcome her to the club!

Sadly, we have also lost two long time members and friends, Rich Robinson and Craig Funk.  They were both very active in the club in the past and will be missed by all of us.  Our thoughts are with their family members, Christine, Phillip and Renee Robinson and Cher Funk.  Please continue to reach out to them if you can and offer any help that may be needed.
We have a great opportunity to take a course in Marine Electronics with Poverty Bay Sail & Power Squadron. The course covers boat electrical systems, communication systems and marine navigation systems.  It will start on September 15th.  Sue has included more details are in this Barnacle.  I plan to attend as I am sure we could all benefit from taking this course.  My experience with Power Squadron courses is very positive!  The course is planned for Wednesday evenings and is comprehensive, running about three months in length.  Sue has also added an education page on our website, giving more details and linking back to the PBSPS website.

The second Tuesday in September is a very special evening.  We will have a business meeting followed by a very special, not to be missed, slideshow highlighting a cruise in the Caribbean by our very own Ray Valpey!  The meeting will be held at an excellent Italian restaurant in Burien, Angelo’s.  We need good attendance as the major business for the September meeting is the nomination of officers for next year.

Finally, I want to urge you to go to our yacht club website (www.ttpyc.org) frequently and review the constantly updated Google calendar, race, cruise and social events.  My amazing wife spends a great amount of time keeping this site up to date and entertaining.  You will find the links to our donors a great way to contact them.  Just click on their logo and it will take you to their website.  If you contact them directly, please be sure to thank them for their donations to our MidSound Summer Social.

Have fun!
